Profile

bdx is an artist name for Tokyo-based music producer Kenji Rikitake. His former pseudonym was JJ1BDX, his amateur radio callsign.

Kenji began making music at age 17 in 1982, after losing most of the sight in his right eye. From 1982 to 1986, he recorded under the name JJ1BDX. During these years, he learned pop music production using early drum machines, sequencers, and synthesizers such as the Roland TR-606, TB-303, MC-202, TR-909, and Yamaha DX7.

Building on his early experiences, in the early 1990s, Kenji began using the artist name bdx and, from 1994 to 2002, served as Internet Archivist for Neuro Net Recordings, a pioneering online music distribution project. During these years, Kenji immersed himself in underground club music culture and honed audio engineering skills, including digital mastering. His music engineering work is archived on the Internet Archive.

Since 2026, Kenji has restarted his music career as a DJ and music producer under the name bdx. He has also spent 36 years as a professional software engineer and is still going strong in the computer career.

The most influential music artists for bdx include the Yellow Magic Orchestra and its founding members, Haruomi Hosono, Yukihiro Takahashi, and Ryuichi Sakamoto. The other influential artists include Kraftwerk, DJ Krush, Hardfloor, and TESTSET.

Kenji was born in 1965 and raised in Setagaya City, Tokyo, Japan, except for spending 1.25 years in Boulder, Colorado, USA from March 1974 to May 1975, at age 9 to 10. He also spent 27.5 years in Toyonaka City, Osaka, Japan, from July 1992 to December 2019. Kenji speaks Japanese and English.
